Past Research: I am currently developing ideas to test aspects of the relationship between diversity and ecosystem function in marine habitats. I am interested in the evenness component of diversity as well as species or taxonomic richness and wish to look at primary production in benthic salt marsh microalgae and rocky intertidal seaweeds. I may consider other ecosystem functions in these systems.

Work in addition to my thesis development involves use of HPLC to characterize microalgal assemblages in Tijuana Estuary. We are gaining information about microalgal succession in a created marsh and how the created marsh system differs from an adjacent natural marsh.

Other Research Interests: I have a general interest in algal systematics (seaweeds in particular). This is manifest in part by my ongoing (but lately stalled) preparation of an undated checklist to the marine seaweeds of California. The list is an updated supplement to Abbott and Hollenberg (1976).

Botany 545b: Marine Algae: Seaweeds & Phytoplankton at the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories - a great course!
